No.

You can be a freelancer without a niche, and I know many freelancers who never found theirs. There’s just one small problem. They all:

Struggle to find clients

Have shitty rates

End up hating their freelance business

Why?

There are thousands of other freelancers just like you, all waiting for clients to go find them. Except they are invisible to their clients’ eyes, because they are just like everyone else.

So yeah, maybe you do need a niche after all. Now let’s see how to find one.

Not all niches are created equal: the sexiest your niche, the more crowded it’s probably going to be.

The 3 features of any great niche

Every good niche I have ever seen has 3 features.

The niche is growing or mature/stable

There is enough demand that you can carve a sub-niche for yourself

It’s not impossible to target potential clients within that niche

If 1 is missing, you can probably work something out, but you are always going to struggle. If 2 or 3 are missing, that niche is not a good niche and you should run away and find something else.

The niche is growing or mature/stable

You don’t want to find yourself in a niche that is shrinking, or where everyone is losing money.

Newspapers is the first example that comes to mind. If you provide any freelance service to newspapers, you are going to struggle even if you are good, because the market is sh*t. If you offer that same service to niche sites, a market that is actually growing right now, you are probably going to be able to sell them at a much higher rate.

Another example? My translation niche is Forex (mature market with lots of operators) and cryptocurrency.

The demand for Forex translation services is stable – it’s a pretty good market that’s been around for centuries. Crypto is different. The cryptocurrency market is quite unstable and moves in 4 year cycles, with 2 years up and 2 years down. Do you know what happens during the 2 years it spends going down? Demand dies down.

There is enough demand that you can carve a sub-niche for yourself

This is what happens when you go from ‘I’m a copywriter’ to ‘I’m a copywriter specialized in building funnels.’

A bit better, and it starts to get interesting, but still not perfect.

How about ‘I’m a copywriter who specializes in building funnels for investment firms?’

I’m sure we can all agree – if you are a business development manager who’s unhappy about their current funnel and someone like this reaches out, you are going to notice!

For this to happen, though, your niche needs to be big enough for you to be able to specialize further.

It’s not impossible to target potential clients within that niche

This has a lot to do with lead generation and the different tactics you can use to find clients for your freelance business.

If you are targeting businesses, finding them will never be an issue. If you are targeting people, however, make sure that you can identify them first. If your ideal client does not hang out in any groups, can’t be targeted with an email, and you can only reach out to them with a phone call and only after 6PM once he’s done with work… you may have a problem.

Solve that problem. Run away.

You may not have a niche, but have you considered SME?

Your niche may not be clear yet, but we all have something we’re already knowledgeable about – that’s your SME – subject matter expertise.

First off is your professional/educational background. What do you currently do, or what did you do, in the last 10 years? If you have not spent them working, but rather studying, what was the subject of those studies? Major in electrical engineering? 10 year working as a travelling nurse? These can all help you.

Second, you want to consider your hobbies and passions. Motorbikes? Make up? Scuba diving? There are opportunities here.

Before you start developing a niche, consider your subject matter expertise – it can help you steer your wheel in the right direction from the get go.

How to land your first clients in your freelance niche

If you really want something, do whatever it takes to get it.

As a freelancer trying to break into a new niche, that could mean you will need to work for very little money or – God forbid – for free for a little bit.

And that is perfectly fine.

Extra tip: as you start growing your client base in a niche, consider accepting one or two anchor clients, even if they negotiate a reduced rate (nothing too crazy, though). That’ll give you some time to land other clients, and a couple of industry names as additional proof of your skills.

How to find work in a niche with zero experience as a freelancer

My suggestion? If you need to do some work for free, or for very little money, then work for yourself.

If you are a SEO, build your own website. If you are a writer, guest post on high-profile media outlets (extra tip – this will teach you pitching as well). If you are a web designer, create templates, then sell them on marketplaces.

I realize this may not be applicable for all freelance gigs.

As a translator, translating Wikipedia pages doesn’t impress anyone. As a consultant, you can’t help yourself. And as a virtual assistant, you need someone to… well, assist.

If that is your situation, don’t be scared to work for very little money as you start your freelance journey. Upwork may be a good place to do that.

How to enter a new niche as an experienced freelancer

If you already have some experience under your freelance belt, congrats – the situation is much easier for you!

Here are 3 steps you should take:

Update your web presence. LinkedIn, industry-specific directories, your website. They all need to show you are looking for work in your new niche.

Start reaching out to all your previous and current clients to tell them about your new service. They already trust you with other projects, so there’s no reason why they shouldn’t trust you with new ones.

If any new clients come knocking at your door but they seem hesitant, don’t lose the opportunity – give them some kind of introductory fee (a 20% discount should suffice), making clear that it only applies to your first project.

How to own your niche (and kill any price objection)

Authority.

Authority can single-handedly take your freelance business to six figures… if you know how to build it.

When potential clients see you as their best choice, the only freelancer in the whole world who can solve their pain points and

save them money

grow their profit

give them back their time

They won’t budge when they’re quoted a much higher rate, or that they have to wait for a few extra days before they get the deliverables.

But how do you build authority? Here are a couple of options.

This is what ‘owning a niche’ looks like

Steal other businesses’ authority

It sounds bad, but it’s actually not.

If I’m an entrepreneur in a given field, what podcasts do I listen to? What niche-specific websites do I visit? What seminars do I attend? Why do I go there, and not somewhere else?

Because they have authority in my eyes.

That’s why guest posting, podcast appearances and talks are so valuable – because they allow you to associate your name to that of authoritative businesses.

Now, some freelance gigs may not be suitable for this tactic – as a proofreader, I get it that it’s hard to find something to guest post about on Fast Company. If that’s your case, don’t despair, because the next tactic can be used by freelancers in any field.

Become the only freelance [Writer/Designer/Whatever] in the room

Are you a writer specialized in health and fitness? If you join the ‘Health and fitness writers group’ on any social network, you are nothing special.

But if you attend the annual conference of health and fitness bloggers, with an entry ticket of $2,997… I bet you are either the only writer in the room, or one of few.

If you choose conferences, then you are going to have to spend some money. Here are a couple of cheaper options:

Free – Try Facebook groups where your clients hang out. Don’t become a used car salesman. Just be helpful. Answer questions when you can provide value. Always mention what you do. Leads will come.

(relatively) Low cost – Paid communities! Paid communities for entrepreneurs or people in your industry are a goldmine of potential clients. They are similar to Facebook groups, but the monthly subscription creates a barrier to entry. People who spend money to network and grow their businesses are always interested in great service providers.

Grow your personal brand by posting contents

This is my least favorite method, but it works.

It’s also the simplest – create great contents on social networks, start getting followers (this freelancer gained 150k of them on TikTok) and opportunities will follow.

Why don’t I like it? Because either you know how to do it, or you are wasting hours and hours every single week. As a freelancer, you don’t need an active social media presence. If you decide you want one, then you’d better make it laser-focused on getting leads.

1. Find your (FU) number

Some people want to freelance for money. Others for lifestyle.

Some want to get to six figures like I did, no matter the cost. Others want to work from home to stay closer to their loved ones. Oh, and a few only need something that pays their bills while they travel the world.

Some want to scale this full time and quite their job – for them, the number is the same as their current salary. Others are just looking for a side hustle and have a certain amount in mind – maybe you want to make an extra $1000 per month.

Whatever your reasons to become a freelancer, it helps to start with a clear goal in mind, because what you want is going to have an impact on the road that you need to take.

You are looking for an extra $1000 per month and you are a full-stack developer?

Don’t even bothering learning too much about social media posts or email marketing – you don’t need it. Just create a half-decent Upwork profile and learn the basics for a good cover letter, and you can reach your goal in a few weeks.

But if you are currently making $85,000 and you want to replace your salary freelancing as a virtual assistant, then be aware that there is a path to do that, but it’s probably going to take a couple of years and a lot of learning.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="http://domenicotrimboli.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/When-to-quit-your-job-683x1024.png" alt="Months 0-3: work. Months 3-6: make some money.

2. Decide on a skill to sell – and a market to sell it to

Have you got a skill that lends itself to start freelancing? If the answer is yes, do you want to use it?

A lot of times, people start thinking about freelancing because they want to escape their job. Do something different. If that’s your situation, don’t worry – there are other ways.

Today there are plenty of online courses to pick up skills you can easily sell as a freelancer. Examples include:

Proofread Anywhere by Caitlin Pike – If your colleagues call you for help when they have to send an email, deliver a paper or write anything in general, proofreading can be a fantastic freelance gig

Fully Booked VA by Gina Horkey – If you are a time management freak with good social skills, and you can do a number of things an entrepreneur might want to avoid, freelancing as a VA a great way to go

Bookkeeper Launch by Kelly Robinson – If you are good with numbers, freelancing as a bookkeeper allows you to make good money while working just a few hours per week

But it doesn’t end here. In fact, there are tons of freelance opportunities out there that are perfect for beginners, side hustlers, wannabe digital nomads, stay at home mums and many others.

Subject matter expertise

We all have skills we bring to the table – hard skills, soft skills and meta skills that make us valuable for someone.

When taken alone, though, skills don’t make us unique or irreplaceable. To become unique, you should focus on a mix of skills and knowledge in a specific area, or subject matter expertise.

A subject matter expert is someone who has thorough knowledge and in-depth understanding of a specific topic.

An example? As a translator with 10+ years of experience, I can easily charge any client €0.08 per word. Only when I add significant knowledge – and experience – in the Forex and crypto industry, though, I can jump into the € 0.12 to 0.15 range.

I have good news for you – as you are starting out as a freelancer, you don’t need to have subject matter expertise already. But if you want to grow your business, you can’t be a generalist for too long – sooner or later, you will need to develop some kind of specialization.

Create a niche for yourself

You have your skill. And you have your subject matter expertise. It’s now time to find a specific niche you want to serve.

A lot of people get this wrong – they are scared it’ll limit their option, and they want to keep them as wide open as possible. It makes sense – you have 0 client, and you want to be able to get as many as possible.

A previous client of mine wanted to kickstart her journey as a freelance social media manager. She felt ready to help small businesses of all kinds to grow their audience on Facebook.

3. Create your web presence

As you’ll quickly find out, each marketing strategy requires some assets.

Cold pitches become more effective when you can link to a website, a case study or an item in your portfolio. If you want to white label your service to an agency, they may require a resume. And if you choose to start on Upwork, you are going to need a perfect Upwork profile.

You don’t need them all. Actually, you don’t want them all.

You need one.

And you need it to be freaking amazing.

Website

Please don’t choose one of the free options – they make you look cheap. You are running a business, and you are lucky – it has minimal initial investment to get it started. So invest in your business – the expense is minimal and it’ll make you look more credible.

Buy a domain name on Godaddy and a hosting package from a reputable provider (I recommend WPX), then decide if you want to design the website yourself or pay a professional to do it.

If you are tight on budget, you will find many web designers on Upwork that’ll be happy to design an ok website for less than $250.

Keep things simple – home page, about page, portfolio and contact are all you are going to need.

Want a stupid simple shortcut?

Here’s an even cheaper option.

If you don’t want to invest in website setup, a designer and everything else, you can use a service called Carrd. Carrd allows you to create a single-page website for $49 per year, and their templates are sick!

Remember, you don’t need a complicated website – you simply need one that makes you look professional and not amateurish. For that, Carrd works well enough.

Portfolio/Work samples

Your portfolio is not your own journal of success stories – it’s a tool to attract new clients. Highlight what they want, not what you want.

What does that mean? That you may have to let go of what you want to say to make room to what your clients want to hear.

If you rebuilt a website for a small business in your area, don’t focus on how beautiful it is. The potential client may agree or disagree, but even more important, they don’t care.

What they care about is how the higher speed helped the business with their SEO to rank higher on Google and attract new leads. Or how the interface you redesigned highlighted the email subscription boxes, resulting in a noticeable increase of email subscribers.

Resume

Do you even need a resume as a freelancer? That depends on your niche and your ideal client.

In my industry (translation) you usually need a resume. If yours is like mine, here are a few tips to create a great one:

Target your resume to the specific client you are sending it to. Make it ultra relevant. Mirror their key words. Cut the fluff.

If possible, include data from previous work you did. Clients want results, and if you have tangible proof you can get them those results, you are more likely to be selected.

Don’t hide your niche – if you did your homework, your niche will be relevant to the potential client at hand. Showcase your previous work in their area as best as you can.

Don’t just shoot your resume and pray – create a great cover letter and use it in the body of your email.

4. Start marketing your services to find clients

There are many ways to find freelance clients.

They include sending cold email pitches and Upwork proposals, commenting on Facebook groups, creating YouTube videos and many more. I actually listed 10 of them here.

Unless you want to wait for months or even years to get your first client, I’d never recommend you to start a website. Likewise, if you want this to become your full time profession in 2 years and you are in one of the least paid freelance niches, I’d recommend to stay away from Upwork.

Whatever your situation, here are my two favorite ways to get new clients fast, regardless of your situation.

Lead Gen Idea #1 – Answer job posts on Upwork

If you have never made a single dollar freelancing, now is not the time to worry about money. Your first priority should be to gain some resemblance of experience. I don’t care if it’s well paid or not, and you shouldn’t either.

I know Upwork has a bad rep for low prices, but I also know something else – when I started out as a freelance translator, I had no degree and no professional experience under my belt. The three years I spent on Upwork gave me the experience I needed to then move on to much more lucrative gigs.

Upwork acted as a springboard for my freelance career, and it can do the same for yours.

I wrote a pretty exhaustive guide on writing Upwork proposals that work. Here’s the TLDR:

Study the job post carefully; posts say more than meets the eye, but only if you know how to read them

YOU are not the focus of your proposal – the client is; determine their problem and be relevant

End your proposal with a call to action, aka tell the client what you want them to do to move to the next steps

Be quick – most of the time, the job goes to the first freelancer who sends a 5-star proposal

As you start writing your first proposal, accept that it will be bad. That’s ok, we all start somewhere, and even more important… it doesn’t matter.

Put things in perspective. You won’t ‘lose your face’ if your proposal sucks.

It’ll be just another proposal that sucks, in a long list of proposals that suck, in a long list of projects that the client needs to assign. They won’t remember your bad proposal. They don’t know who you are, and they never will until they start working with you.

You know what that means.

Hit the send button.

Lead Gen Idea #2 – Network on Facebook groups

I feel like networking has become such a broad term that I wouldn’t be surprised if you are wondering ‘What does this even mean?’

Not every group lends itself to productive networking. In fact, I think many freelancers waste their time writing things only other freelancers are interested in.

I don’t want you to waste your time, especially now that you should use it to get your first clients. Instead, I want you to find the right groups – groups where your clients hang out.

If you offer funnel building services for SaaS companies, the SaaS Growth Hacks Facebook group (31K members) can help. Freelance proofreader? Self Publishing Support Group (50K members). Last, if you are a VA, Time Management & Productivity For Female Entrepreneurs is a much smaller group (‘only’ 1.5K members) but full of pre-qualified potential clients.

Whatever your freelance skill, there is a group that is perfect for your ideal client – and therefore for you.

What to do once you have found the perfect group? Just contribute whenever you can be of help. If someone is asking something that you know the answer to, share your knowledge. Start with ‘Based on my experience as a freelance X’, then help.

Don’t get sales-y – there is no need to. Once you start showing competence, leads will come.

Important note: before you start implementing this strategy, make sure your profile is optimized. That means no drunk photos with friends, no unprofessional updates, the usual suspects. If you are an active Facebook user, you may want to keep you and your solo business separate – in that case, create a dedicated profile.

5. Determine your rates

As a beginner, there are two ways you can price your services: based on your hourly rate expectation, and based on your competition. My advice? Calculate them both ways, then find the sweet spot.

Calculate your target hourly rate

Before you can even start thinking about your rates, you need to determine how much money you want to make per year and how much time you want to dedicate to work.

A year has 52 weeks – assuming you will be sick for 2 and you will take 6 off, there are 44 weeks left.

If you want to work Monday through Friday, 5 hours of billable work per day, you have 1100 working hours per year. If you want to make $55,000, you’ll need to charge $50/hour.

If, however, you can dedicate 6 billable hours to client work every day, then you are up to 1320 hours. In this case, you only need to make $42 per hour.

Fill in your numbers and find out. The formula goes like this

Target hourly rate = Target yearly income / Billable hours per day * number of days per week you want to work * number of weeks you want to work in a given year

Once you calculate this, you need to find out how long it takes you to deliver your service. If you are selling 2000-word blog posts, how long does it take you to write one? If you design 3-page websites, can you anticipate how many hours they take? (If you are not sure, a time tracking app can help you)

Compare that with your target hourly rate, and that’s how much you should charge.

EXAMPLE: Jim is a freelance writer. He wants to make $100,000 per year, working 4 hours per day for 5 days a week, 45 weeks per year. The math is simple:

100,000/4*5*45 = $111/hour.

If it takes him 4 hours to research and write a 2,000-word blog post, he’ll need to charge his clients either $444 per article, or $0.22 per word.

Model your prices based on your competition

Good news for you – the Internet is full of service providers. If you want to charge a reasonable price, study how much they are charging, then try to understand if their services are better or worse than yours. (If they are better, by the way, work to get up to speed)

As you will quickly notice, prices vary widely for similar services. Some translators work at $0.02 per word. Others charge 10 times more. Are they 10 times better than their poorer colleagues? Probably not.

But if they can charge as much as they do, and still get clients who are happy to pay them, that’s great news for you. It means there is a market that can pay those rates.

As you are starting out, you will probably end up working somewhere along the lower portion of the rate continuum. Most online gurus will tell you not to do that, and that you should charge what you are worth.

I disagree.

As you are starting out as a freelancer, I think gaining experience is the most important thing you can do. That is, in and by itself, the most important currency you are going to get for the first few months.

Charge as much as you can, but not enough that clients won’t hire you. If you can’t find any other way, charge peanuts, but find a way to charge more. Invest in yourself. Develop your skills or your ability to market them.

The world is full of former freelancers who went back to the corporate world because they thought their gig was not lucrative enough, while others in the exact same area are thriving.

If you can, consider offering a retainer to your first clients to turn them into anchor clients. They may pay a discounted rate, but that’ll make sure you start making some money while you work on growing your freelance business.

6. Turn finding clients into a habit

Before you start using any of these strategies, you need to create a bulletproof system to do it not just now, but over and over again.

Freelancing means owning a solo business – just like any other business, either it’s growing, or it’s shrinking.

In other words, you need to create a habit of marketing your services. Here is how you can do it.

According to James Clear, author of Atomic Habits and personal hero of mine, this is the backbone of every habit:

The cue is the initial trigger that signals a potential reward, motivating the brain to engage in a behavior. The brain constantly scans for these cues as they indicate the proximity to a desired reward.

Cravings, the second step, are the motivational forces driving every habit. They’re not about the habit itself but the change in state the habit promises. For instance, the act of smoking a cigarette is driven by the craving for relief it provides, not the action itself.

The third step is the response, the actual habit performed. If the action is too challenging, or if you lack the ability to perform it, the habit won’t occur.

Finally, the reward satisfies the craving and teaches the brain to remember the action. Rewards have two functions: satisfying immediate cravings and teaching the brain to recognize actions that fulfill desires. Pleasurable experiences reinforce the habit, completing the cycle.

A habit only forms if all four stages are sufficiently fulfilled. Mr. Clear’s recommendation to form new habits is this:

Make the cue obvious.

Make the craving attractive.

Make the response easy.

Make the reward satisfying.

Here’s how can you apply this to your freelance journey:

Choose a time or a moment of the day for your promotional activities. Same thing, Monday through Friday, at a specific time or when something occurs (e.g. the kids leave to go to school). You want to get your mind used to do that thing, at that moment, till it becomes an automatic response.

Bundle this new habit with something that you actually enjoy – e.g. if you are a morning person, take care of finding leads while you have your coffee in the morning. The brain will slowly start to associate the two things.

Start simple. If you decided to send Upwork proposals (LINK) but you are struggling to actually hit Send, accept that you’ll write one without actually sending it. You’ll do the same thing for whatever time you need, until you feel confident enough to actually push the Send button.

Reward yourself for what you just did! Common ideas include eating a snack or doing an activity that you enjoy, like walking the dog.

7. Extra tip – Is freelancing your ONE thing?

Not to sound discouraging, but… it’ll suck.

If you are thinking that starting out as a freelancer will be exciting, rewarding and fully of joy… think twice. Ask all those people with a profile on Upwork that’s stuck at zero jobs, zero reviews, zero dollars. They were full of hope. Then they found out the truth – starting to freelance is freaking difficult!

That is why, before we even begin to answer, you need to ask yourself one question – is freelancing your one thing? The thing that you want so much that you can pour your heart and soul into?

You don’t need to answer now, but you’ll have to decide if it is before you start transitioning into your new freelance role. Because if it isn’t, there may be other ways.

The concept of the one thing is not mine (I am not that smart) – it comes from NYT bestselling book The One Thing by Gary Keller. Why should you care? Because it says some things that I want you to remember:

Not everything matters equally – you should prioritize what matters most to you

Success is the result you get when you narrow your concentration to one single thing

You don’t achieve wins through willpower, but as a result of habit

If freelancing is your one thing, and if you are ready to prioritize it for the next few weeks, months and maybe years, then you are ready to begin.

Conclusion

I have to make a confession – I am lucky.

You see, a lot of people dread freelancing for the uncertainty, the feast and famine, the lack of 401Ks and paid days off. Others consider freelancing one of their options. Something that may or may not materialize, and if it doesn’t, that’s ok.

For me, freelancing has never been just an option.

I knew it from the moment I got my first job.

It was a measly $20 project on Elance (today’s Upwork), but I couldn’t care less. My freelancing journey had just begun.

Now is your time to begin yours.

Building a machine that gets you clients passively is amazing. But it takes time. If you need clients quickly, because you are just starting to freelance as a side hustle or for any other reason, skip to the Outbound marketing section.

1. Rank as high as possible in professional directories

All freelance services have directories of professionals. As a translator, I worked hard for 2 years to rank my profile as high as possible in the Proz.com directory.

It took me a long time to finally get to page one, but it paid off – over the next 5 years, I made $250k+ from leads who reached out to me directly after they found me on the directory. They could have been even more if my rates were lower, but they were enough to keep me busy all the time.

The key here is ranking your profile. Every directory has dozens of professionals, but can you be one of the first names potential clients see when they open the website? All directories have their own ranking system – find one where you can rank as quickly as possible.

Directories you can use include:

99designs.com for all design professionals (from logo to websites, but also business cards, illustrations and anything in between)

Proz.com for translators – undoubtedly the most important directory of the whole translation industry

Upwork – I know, I know. Upwork has a bad rep among freelancers for their notoriously low prices. Still, it’s a great freelance website for beginners.

2. Create your own website…

Even if your business is a one-person show, we’re in an era where a website is an essential asset. Having a website not only enhances your credibility but also positions you as a dedicated professional mindful of their image.

If diving deep into web design isn’t your thing, or if you’re not keen on hiring a WordPress expert, fear not. WordPress offers intuitive tools for website creation, and with the right lead generation tactics, you can draw in potential clients.

… Without forgetting SEO

To get hired or grow your subscribers, people need to first discover you. This is where SEO comes into play.

SEO stands for enhancing your website’s visibility by aiming to appear in the top search engine results.

To get the most out of SEO, consider starting a blog, producing valuable content consistently, and optimizing it using relevant keywords.

Imagine the amount of qualified leads you could get if you were ranking as the 5th or 6th result for your target keyword

3. Write guest posts (where your clients hang out)

This tactic requires you to know at least a little bit about your ideal client (which you should, by the way). More specifically, where is that they hang out? What blogs or websites do they read to solve their challenges?

If you freelance as a game designer, chances are your potential clients will read industry sites like Gamedeveloper.com (previously Gamasutra). Backlink provider? There are a host of websites dedicated to SEO for businesses of different levels. Where is it that they don’t hang out? Websites and magazines that are dedicated to your profession only – you and your colleagues read it, but they don’t.

Once you have determined a list of potential publications, it’s time to pitch your guest post ideas to their editors/content managers. Ideally, you want a topic that is interesting to their audience while allowing you to showcase your abilities.

If you can include the results (actual data and numbers) you managed to obtain for previous clients of yours, even better!

Your guest post is yout time to shine – research the topic deeply, find out what the best articles are for your keyword, and then go the extra mile to write something that is even better.

Do this for a few months, for the best sites you can get a ‘yes’ from, and always link back to your website at the end of the article or in your author bio – slowly but surely, clients will start trickling in.

How to get freelance clients through outbound marketing

Now that you know what inbound marketing is, outbound marketing should be quite intuitive – if a marketing effort involves you getting in touch with the client, and not vice versa, you are doing outbound marketing.

Why would I ever do that if I can simply generate clients passively through inbound marketing?!

All the introverts who ever read this article

Inbound marketing is absolutely great. You can build a whole freelance career out of inbound marketing only, and you’ll do great.

BUT.

If you are at a point where you can’t raise your rates further.

If you want to work with a dream client of yours.

Or if you want to land clients quickly, probably because you are just starting out.

Then inbound marketing can’t get you there. You have to take the lead and reach out to your potential clients first. Here are a few ways to do that…

4. Answer job posts

Out of this entire list of ways to get freelance clients, answering job posts is the quickest. By far.

That is exactly why I used it to start my career as a freelancer – I answered job posts on Upwork. At first, I was terrible at it. But I kept reviewing and refining my proposals till I finally got a project.

If you want to become a master at writing proposals for freelance jobs, there are a few points to keep in mind:

A good proposal is 50% observation, 40% writing and 10% timing – read the job post at least twice

Your proposal is not about you. The client doesn’t care about you – they care about them

Everything you write in your proposal should have a goal – define that first, then write accordingly

Not all proposals will get you jobs. I write good proposals, but my win rate is still less than 50%. Don’t make it personal

Let’s try to explain this better with an analogy. If I told you that you should read my website because it has ‘more than 50 articles on freelancing’, would you care? I don’t think you would. Having more than 50 articles means something… to me.

What if I told you ‘You know how you’ve mentioned several times that you’d like to try freelancing? I have written more than 50 articles on it, so I can help you to start that journey.’

To write good proposals, don’t start from yourself. Start from the client and work from there.

5. Cold email outreach campaign

Data source: Quickmail

Nothing activates your imposter syndrome like a good old cold email outreach campaign. And that is exactly why you should plan one.

Cold outreach means getting in touch with people you have never interacted with, in order to create a connection and ultimately sell your services.

Planning an email campaign is simple. Here are the necessary steps:

Create a list of clients you want to work with

Find the contact person you should talk to within the clients’ businesses. Freelance writer? Content manager. Freelance translator? Localization manager. Most of the time, big businesses will have a manager that’s dedicated exactly to your area.

For each business and person you need to contact, you need a specific email address.

Once you have your list, it’s time to send your highly-targeted, customized email. That’s when the going gets tough. My tip? Keep your email short and to the point. Make your cold pitch about the client, not about you. And don’t be afraid of rejection – it’s part of the email outreach game, and nothing you should be scared of.

PS: Don’t forget your follow-ups. I recommend at least one email + 2 follow-ups. But I’ve heard of people following up periodically (around once a month) for 6 to 8 months before they even got an answer.

Social networks

Is this inbound? Is this outbound? A lot depends on how you use social networks, but that’s beyond the point.

What truly matters is that social networks can be a goldmine of potential clients… if you know how to use them. Here are a couple ideas to establish a social presence that actually makes you money.

6. Build a strong LinkedIn presence

LinkedIn optimizes your profile using keywords for search visibility.

For instance, if you search “freelance app developer near Chicago” on Google, you’ll likely see a selection of LinkedIn’s leading freelance graphic designers in that area.

When building your profile, focus on these sections:

Headline: It’s a space to establish credibility. While incorporating keywords is good, remember you’re engaging humans, not just algorithms.

Summary: You’re allocated 2000 characters to showcase your expertise. Make the most of it.

Projects: Feature your top-notch work by uploading PDFs or images, and include descriptions rich in keywords.

Header image: This 1000 by 425-pixel space is essentially free advertising real estate. Use it wisely.

Recommendations: Encourage past colleagues and clients to highlight your strengths. And reciprocate the favor! Sometimes, the key to receiving a recommendation is to give one first.

And remember, LinkedIn is still a social network – be social! Join groups and comment on clients’ and colleagues’ posts… if you have something relevant to say.

7. Answer posts on Facebook groups

With 200 million small businesses using Facebook for marketing, getting clients through Facebook groups is definitely possible… if you know which groups you should hang out in.

Put yourself in the client’s shoes – what’s interesting to them? Groups where freelancers complain about their nightmare client of the week, or groups where:

They can find insights and expert advice on what matters to them

Other entrepreneurs share their challenges

They get assistance when a software they use (that’s related to your niche) stops working

I think you know the answer.

If you are in the right groups, it’s easy for you to find clients who are struggling with something that’s related to your area of expertise. Once you do, just showcase your expertise. Give them suggestions. Don’t offer them your services, because people hate to be pitched something when they only asked for advice. Show them you are the real deal and you can solve their problem. They’ll come to you. Rinse and repeat. Build yourself a name in these groups. It’s just a matter of time before clients come knocking at your door.

8. Post daily – and strategically – on TikTok

We mentioned Facebook groups and LinkedIn for inbound interest, but what about other platforms like Instagram, Pinterest or TikTok? I never thought much of them until I met Janine, who kickstarted her freelance design business on TikTok.
Identify Your Target Audience: Understand the types of TikToks that interest you to narrow down your audience, like those interested in fashion or comedy.

Consistency is Key: Regular posting helps build a body of work, shows commitment, and increases visibility in feeds.

Stir Up Controversy: Creating controversy can attract followers, but it’s important to balance it with positive engagement.

Include a Call to Action: Encourage actions like subscribing or following other accounts, which helps in growing your follower base.

Cross-Promote on Other Platforms: Share TikTok content on other social media platforms to reach a wider audience and gain followers.

9. Answer questions on platforms like Quora and Reddit

It may not be applicable to all freelance businesses, but if you are a writer or a marketer, answering questions on platforms like Quora and Reddit can add fuel to the fire of your freelance business.

Nicolas Cole, ghostwriter and writing course creator, became the most-read writer on all of Quora in 2015.

This is his advice on doing this the right way. (And give him a follow, he’s pretty great.)

Don’t just answer questions. Tell stories

Answer every question possible in your category/niche

Only answer questions you can write high-value answers to

Don’t delete old answers

Volume wins

Don’t overthink it. Just write

‘Ok, let’s create a website’ ‘No, wait! That guy said the quickest way is to start answering job proposals!’ ‘What if I tried Facebook instead? I’m there all the time anyway’

I don’t know about you, but that’s what happens in my head when I read all those ways to find new clients. I want to try them all out.

And that would be a mistake.

Mastering one channel is not easy, mastering two requires experience, and if you think you are mastering 3, you are probably doing them all wrong. When it comes to lead generation techniques, my suggestion is super simple.

One product. One channel. One avatar.

Actually, it’s not my suggestion. I heard it from an online business guru, so it must be true!

That business guru was Alex Hormozi. A guy who builds and grows multi-million businesses for a living. When he speaks, I pay attention.

I don’t want you to start doing all of these things at once. On the contrary, I want you to choose a single one, and dedicate it one hour per day for 3 months. Monday to Friday, every day, religiously, no matter what. Most people will spend 3 hours per day on their freelance business in their first week, 2 in their second week, and they’ll be out of (a never-really-launched) business in one month. Don’t do that. One hour per day is all you need.

In 6 months, I can pretty much guarantee you will have so much work that you won’t be able to take on new clients, not even if you wanted to. When the time comes, come back – we’ll discuss how to raise your rates.
